POLLUTION Pollution is the introduction of harmful materials into the environment. These harmful materials are called pollutants. Pollutants can be natural, such as volcanic ash. They can also be created by human activity, such as trash or runoff produced by factories. Pollutants damage the quality of air, water, and land. Pollution can take the form of chemical substances or energy , such as noise, heat, or light. Pollutants , the components of pollution, can be either foreign substances/energies or naturally occurring contaminants. Pollution is often classed as point source or nonpoint source pollution . In 2015, pollution killed 9 million people worldwide. All living things—from one-celled microbe s to blue whales—depend on Earth’s supply of air and water.
